The students I work with have a variety of specific needs, including social, emotional, or behavioral challenges. They are kindergarten through sixth graders who require extra support through individual or group counseling services.
These elementary school students will benefit from counseling resources that can help them meet their social and emotional needs by learning skills they can utilize across settings.
The students will be given instruction, activities, and games that help them develop the skills to be able to handle the challenges they face.
My Project
I will use these materials for a number of reasons, to teach my students new skills that they haven't previously heard about, to utilize different activities and games to learn and practice new skills and/or skills we may have already reviewed, and to teach me more specific practices that will help me with my general counseling and teaching.
The new skills that will be taught include different coping strategies, social skills that address very specific situations, and how to identify and address different emotions.
The different activities and games to learn and practice skills will take different forms (e.g. card games, board games, group activities working on a common goal), but will all involve identifying and/or practicing specific skills. The practices that will help me with my counseling and teaching include techniques and points of emphasis based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and a mindfulness approach.
