Down and Dirty Learning

My students need 15 hand tools and a composter to work in our beautiful school garden.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime - Chinese Proverb. Think of these wise words and a school garden!

My students are elementary kids in a dual immersion program.

What better way for students to retain information in a second language than hands on learning in a school garden! Our school is located in sunny California where the sunshine is abundant but the funds for education are not. Our school garden is ready to go but, we still lack some vital tools needed to dig and plant. The composter would be a welcome addition to our recycling program and vermicomposting bin. My students are kids who come from low socioeconomic and middle class families. Each student in our school is a second language learner and we teachers and staff know how important experiential learning is to our population.

My Project

With the hand tools and composter, the students at my school will be able to work in the school garden as they learn important grade level concepts and ideas. Our kinder kids can plant seeds in the garden and watch as the seedling sprouts and grows. They can identify and label plant parts, draw pictures and diagrams, and write in their journals while they sit in the great outdoors. All of the grade levels can take advantage of the tools and composter that we hopefully purchase. Teachers can incorporate grade level standards into excellent garden lessons.

If we can get the tools we need to have kids work and have fun in the garden, we can get down and dirty while we learn!

Help me provide the students at my school the tools they need to experience their learning. We can incorporate tons of learning activities in a school garden. We can add learning opportunities to our recycling and vermicomposting projects. Also, we can get parents and community members more involved while we teach kids the importance of gardening and giving back to the Earth
