My students don't have the luxury of traveling and building background knowledge through experience. We are a classroom made up of students from around the world. From Ethiopia, to Mexico, to Puerto Rico, to the Philippines, to right here in our own city. We are a busy classroom full of eager learners. We are a melting pot of cultures, learning and growing from each other. My students support, and understand one another and the struggles they each face. We are a Title I school in an inner city which means we have a low socioeconomic population. Many are new to this country, experiencing a classroom for the first time. The two biggest challenges my students face are lack of technology and lack of experience. There is nothing tying them to the things they learn.
My Project
My students love to read; however, I do not have a collection that is current.
My students choose their books based on what they love.
My students love Dork Diaries by Rachel Renee Russell. Currently, we do have a few books in the series unfortunately the books are falling apart. We also do not have all the books in the series. My students want to read them in order. My students are able to read these books for their reading logs and book clubs. They read Dork Diaries for enjoyment!
We are working towards providing quality books for my students. I want my students to realize that reading is not homework. When they choose a book that they love, they will simply enjoy the book.
