One of my favorite quotes is "teaching in the Internet age means we must teach tomorrow's skills today," spoken by Jennifer Fleming.
Most of my 46 second grade students struggle with positive behavior choices and many have IEPs providing support and behavior interventions.
However, with the creation of S.T.E.A.M. Friday, many learners are now hard-working and persevere even when learning is difficult for them. In order to go to S.T.E.A.M. time, students have to have their homework completed, all work turned in, and no serious behavior infractions for the entire week. This has provided to be motivating for many students. The accountability and structure of school provides relief and stability for many of my students, many of whom have trauma-filled backgrounds.
My Project
Having access to 3D Doodle pens will allow my students to engage their creative side. Much of our school week focuses on academic skills. With art and music frequently cut from our school activities, students need a chance to explore their imagination. Unfortunately, many students have difficulty expressing their thoughts, so the 3D Doodle pens will allow them to explore and practice creative expression.
Once students make a 3-D creation, they will sell their creations at a student store.
Money raised will be used to solve school and/or community problems my students identify as significant issues. This project will build in team building, problem solving, and life skills such as caring, cooperation, and initiative. These life long schools will pave the road to creating outstanding citizens in the future.
