My Students

My students are hilarious! Not a day goes by that I don't laugh out loud at something they said or drew in class. They love to draw weird faces or elaborate scenes. One of my students even drew a meme about me!

They are artistic and creative in everything they do, whether it's the way they choose to learn, style their hair, or invent a new name for themselves.

They are diverse and come from very different backgrounds. There is no one-size-fits-all for this group of kids. They keep me on my toes and inspire me to constantly evolve my teaching methods.

My Project

The past few years have been so traumatic and overwhelming for my students. I have watched them check out and not even try at school because the stress and uncertainty are so overwhelming. Even in art class! They constantly want to use their phones as a means to cope, but I want to teach them that art can be an escape too.

I've learned that since the pandemic hit, I need to create learning opportunities that are fun, lighthearted, and not intimidating--like doodling!

Lately, students are really interested in doodle videos they see on TikTok. I noticed most of these videos use a micron pen and alcohol markers. In order to engage my students and trick them into learning, I use the current trends to get them engaged! By using these videos and supplies as learning prompts in my class, I can teach advanced art concepts in a fun and non-intimidating way.

I chose high-quality markers in a skin-tone pack, which means we can use them to learn how to draw and shade diverse faces with fun and non-intimidating medium. I can't wait to see the funny, cute, expressive faces they draw!
