Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is made up of middle school students with learning disabilities that are always excited for Science class and the experiments! I always find it a challenge to have STEM activities that utilize literature as a background and promotes science and math.
My special needs students are caring and energetic and ready to have hands on experiments to test and record their findings.
My classroom would provide my students a place to become scientists at work with the right materials!
My students are from Chicago and come from hard-working and loving parents. However, their neighborhood is a high crime poverty area. My school has a 90% poverty rate. Several of my students speak a different language at home.
My Project
With these STEM kits and supplies, I will be able to have my students work in small group lab activities.
My students will get to explore and discover scientific concepts with the incorporation of technology and math.
My students will learn about the human body organs and their functions. My students will use the X-rays and light screen to learn about bones and the names of them. Students will learn about electricity with the STEM Electricity kit with the circuits and wires. Task cards in these kits will guide their instruction and self-discovery.
My students will further utilize investigation and building skills with the Marble Kit and record their findings through a mathematical graph and descriptive summary with academic vocabulary. They will be able to see how angle measurements affects a design that they create. They will be able to test out their hypothesis while building and problem-solving.
