DON'T LET THE NEWSPAPER DIE!

My students need 27 subscriptions of the news magazine called "Time for Kids" and 10 reams of 11"x17" paper to create their own school newspaper.

My Students

It seems like the "newspaper" is becoming a thing of the past with the digital age. Newspapers are rarely found in homes! I want my students to read and discuss a news magazine about current events on their level and learn to write their own articles for a grade level newspaper that they share.

We are one of about 38 elementary schools in a large county in Virginia.

Our school is a specialty center for students with special education needs. Students are mainstreamed into the regular education classroom and seem to really excel that way. Reading and writing can be a real struggle for 2nd graders. I have been developing many projects that tie technology to reading and writing, but think there is plenty of room to teach text features with magazines and the old fashioned NEWSPAPER! I still love to read our local paper and often challenge my students to find and read articles that they share in our morning meeting.

My Project

In 2nd grade language arts, we focus on "text features" in reading. Students must learn to use them to find details and understand important information in nonfiction text because textbooks are full of text features. "Time For Kids" is a children's version of TIME magazine with current events, health and science articles. These magazine subscriptions would be used to teach and master the usage of text features. Students would transfer those skills to writing about current events. They would learn to write articles and layout a design for a school newspaper, using peer editing and then typing skills from lessons in Microsoft Office. Parent volunteers would print the pages on our school's large capacity copier and students would distribute the newspaper in the school. As the year progressed, other classes could submit articles for the paper and students would serve as editors creating those important text features, adding pictures, and creating diagrams.

When I was in elementary school, we had a newspaper.

It made me want to be a writer. In high school, I joined the newspaper and yearbook staff. My favorite class was journalism. Perhaps those influences led me to teach. I want students to appreciate the importance of newspapers/magazines for delivering shortened versions of information and opinion. Printed Media still has an important role in education. With your help, we could create more subscribers and send you a copy of our 1st edition!
