My Students

The students in my class are full of energy, wonder, and enthusiasm. Each student has their own special needs which makes my classroom extremely diverse. They come from various diverse cultures, speak various languages, and many of their families are struggling economically.

They are a community of learners where everyone is valued, where everyone has a voice, where everyone is a self-manager, and where everyone is respected and welcomed.

The school they attend is in the state of Washington. It is culturally diverse, with almost 70% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and over 30% are English language learners.

My Project

Every year, my students are active for more than 60 minutes during the school day from recess, Physical Education, music and classroom activities. My first graders have expressed that they would each like healthy snacks during the day. Healthy snacks are important for 6 and 7 year-old children, not only to refuel their bodies from activities but to keep their minds ready to learn new concepts throughout the day.

In the afternoon and sometimes in the morning, my students get hungry and it is hard to keep them learning when their stomachs are growling, having healthy snacks (crackers, Pretzels, fruit snacks, Goldfish, meat sticks, etc…) will keep them working all day long.

Many of the parents in my classroom cannot afford to send snacks to school with their children. When children are hungry, they complain about their stomach hurting or having a headache. Sometimes, a child gets grumpy or angry for no apparent reason. That child may lash out by yelling or screaming or even throwing something. Once the child has calmed down, s/he is able to rationally tell why s/he was upset. Most of the time it is because the child was hungry.

I want each child to be able to have their basic needs met by providing a snack to them each and every day that they are at school.
