This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My wonderful students love to play the piano. Recently a great school supporter donated a used piano. The kids were elated to finally have another acoustic piano to play on. Most of our kids do not have an instrument to play on at home due to finances.
Our school is located in the heart of a large, urban inner city area.
Poverty is very high. We have above an 85 % free and reduced price lunch population. Though financially challenged, they do not lack in creativity nor musical ability. They love to learn and are especially excited about learning how to play a piano. They are wonderful, loving kids who just want an opportunity. Funding for the Arts is lacking, so we depend upon donations and fundraising to support our program.
My Project
The piano cover and lock will keep this lovely donated piano safe from vandalism, dust, and scratches. Our students will have an acoustic piano to create music, practice and perform simple and difficult repertoire at our annual piano recital. The students will learn music theory, scale fingerings, standard and advanced repertoire for the piano.
Our classroom will benefit by having more than one secure acoustic piano that the kids can enjoy playing.
Learning to play the piano (especially proficiently) will help students think critically. Life long learners must think critically in order to be successful in life.
