This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever seen (or been!) a child who just can't sit still, even when you try? Have you ever tried to focus and work hard when your body is uncomfortable and needs to move? For students with ADHD this is a constant issue.

I have 183 energetic high school students (7 different classes), from 9th to 12th grade, with varying achievement levels, some of them with learning disabilities.

It is really hard for them to seat still in an uncomfortable desk and be engaged in class. Besides, having them all seating at the same height, it is difficult for me to see everyone’s faces and hands when they are signing new vocabulary in American Sign Language.

In my class, they learn American Sign Language to communicate with Deaf people, their culture, values, way of thinking, the situations they go through in life, in their families, and society.

Learning American Sign Language is a great tool they might use in their future career. If they work as doctors in an ER, they will be able to communicate with a Deaf patient about the symptoms, condition and possible treatment, without having to wait long hours for an interpreter to come.

My Project

American Sign Language is a VISUAL LANGUAGE. For that reason, it is extremely important that everyone in my classroom can actually SEE everyone’s faces and HANDS. At this moment, in my classroom, I have 2 rows of desks arranged in a U shape, but I can only see the students in the front row.

I need STANDING DESKS in the BACK ROW, so the rest of the class and me can SEE THEIR HANDS when they are COMMUNICATING IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE.

On the other hand, I would like to have alternative seating in my classroom. Having standing desks with adjustable heights, my students will have the option of working by seating down in a regular chair, in a high wobble stool or standing. Having these alternatives will HELP THEM FOCUS and BE READY TO LEARN American Sign Language. These kids have SO MUCH POTENTIAL, and it is AMAZING to think how something as simple as a standing desk with adjustable height WILL POSITIVELY IMPACT THEIR LEARNING!
