Hello, I am a second grade teacher in inner-city Brooklyn, NY. Guided reading has become a fundamental part of everyday for myself and my students. I have watched shy, struggling readers flourish in the smaller group settings. However, because of a lack of funding, and the size of my classroom, I am often forced to sit on the floor with my students. This causes many obstacles. First, I can not see the rest of my class to make sure that they are on task. Secondly, being on the floor makes it much more difficult to conference one-on-one with each group member. Conferencing is an essential part of guided reading. It allows for assesment, individulaized instruction and immediate impact on comprehension. Being on the floor is often hindering to this because I have to interupt other readers to get close enough to conference, or they have to read loud enough to disrupt the rest of the group. Additionally, because I have to stand to monitor my class, I am distracted from the group dynamics essential to guided reading. Now, I'm sure you are wondering... what is a kidney going to do?! Well actually, it is a table shaped like a kidney. It allows me to sit "with-in" the group and fit as many as 6 per group at the table. Being within the group at all times, conferencing becomes as simple as turning my chair towards each student. Additionally, the height of the table allows me to constantly monitor the class by simply glancing up, rather then having to stand up and remove my self from the group. Thank you for taking the time to read this and consider helping my students.
