My Students

I teach a required Personal Finance class which is typically mostly freshmen. During the class we cover applying for jobs, job related skills, payroll, savings, credit and insurance as well as other topics. Accounting students learn the basics of accounting for a sole proprietorship and merchandising business. Advanced accounting continue on with corporations and payroll.

We work on projects and discussions together, and we love to collaborate and share our projects.

One of the best parts of my job is that I get to share with freshmen skills that they will need and use throughout their life. I love seeing the faces of the Accounting students as they not just learn, but understand the process.

My Project

Because my students are doing higher level math and adding long and multiple numbers, they need access to a better calculator. When the accounting students are working with numbers in the millions and having to add smaller sets and get subtotals, there is more of a chance of error. With calculators with screens, the students can see their numbers as they add and there is less chance of errors in adding. Because our school is a low-income district, many of the students don't have the means to spend lots of money on a calculator that they may or may not use for more than an accounting class or two.
