Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from diverse backgrounds. Our school has over 3,000 students and is the largest high school in the state. Our school often has the greatest ethnic diversity of all the schools in the state with over 50 languages spoken. The majority of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. In our science classrooms, we are moving and working on being NGSS centered. This means teachers are creating and conducting phenomenon based lessons and labs for students to connect science skills and practices from not only science class but in everyday situations.

In order to complete these labs and activities, students need to be able to see visual expectations and procedures.

A document camera is the perfect way to help students succeed in these tasks. With a document camera, the class could all participate in a data collection or an observation that will aid in creating their phenomenon model.

My Project

The Next Generation Science Standards ask students to observe and explain phenomena on a continuous basis. Students need to have the skills to create models that explain scientific phenomena. They also need to have the skills to analyze scientific phenomena and apply science practices that support their explanations of these phenomena.

Students who do not have the use of technology to apply science practices are being left out.

Students are then disengaged from class, the lesson, and the teacher. A document camera is a great help to show students phenomenon. I would be able to put an activity on the board so we can look at it and discuss specifics together as a class. This draws all students in the class together. Students that cannot see phenomenon or experiment clearly, feel left out. This disengagement causes students to lose an interest in the sciences. Science skills and practices are useful tools that students need to be able to access throughout their life. If they are to become disengaged from a class, they are missing important material that could be helpful in their futures.

We need a document camera. This technology will engage students to be more active participants in analyzing data, looking at projects, creating a class discussion or model and allowing students to share their work with classmates up on the board. A document camera will allow our classroom to examine the specific data for bacteria evolving resistance to hand sanitizer or which molecules are present in a fast food meal. These activities will engage students and commit them to learning in science. Students who are engaged in class are excited to learn and will be ready!
