Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Reading and writing is empowering and all students should be given the opportunity to become authors regardless of their abilities and disabilities. Just because I don't have the ability to draw and write letters does it mean that I can't be an author of a book? I am a special education teacher at Peck one of the Chicago Public Schools on the south side of Chicago. I work with eighteen K-3 grade students who range in disabilities: autism, TMH, EMH, ADHD, and LD. All of my students love books and are excited when new books are introduced to them. If we had a digital camera, all students would be able to make their own books and enjoy not only the books by others, but also the books created by them. Each student would have their picture taken for the “author's page” and the page would provide some information about the author (ex: favorite color, etc.). Some students would independently select the subjects for their books and others would be provided with choices. We would take pictures to tell a story and create short sentences to accompany the pictures. Students who are capable of writing would help students who don't have the ability and skills. So, “Do you want to meet the author?” Help us get a digital camera and we will send you a picture of 18 new young authors and their original autographs.
