Do you remember telling your teacher "I can't see."? Do you remember squinting your eyes to see the pictures as the teacher read? Having these books will help me to introduce my kindergarten students to the joys of reading without them having to squint to keep from missing any parts of the book.
My students are African American and Hispanic students who live in a high poverty neighborhood in Dallas.
The neighborhood is also drug and crime infested. Our school is a Title I school with more than 90% of students on free lunch. Our school was just rated academically unacceptable by the state for the second time. Many of their parents do not have a high school education or speak English. Every year, reading is the area where they score the lowest on the state test. Some of the students that come to our school have repeated a grade level, have behavior problems, or are not where they should be academically. It is time for this to change. Many of our students are neglected, have emotional problems, or are being taken care of by their grandparents or siblings. Teachers get little parent support. These students require a lot of love, patience and attention but are a joy to work with.
With these books, I can teach reading skills that will prepare them for the next grade. Not only will these books introduce the students to the classic stories we all know and love, they will also help foster the students' love for reading. These big books will also allow each student the chance to enjoy the illustrations in the book no matter where they are sitting.
Many people have heard that prisons are built according to how many students fail the reading portion of their 3rd grade standardized reading test.
These books will help me prepare my kindergartens for the future so they won't become a statistic.
