I teach the best students in the world! I'm not just saying that; they really are quite incredible! Some of my students have overcome so much in their short lives already while others are just trying to figure this whole "school" thing out. I love my students- their personalities, their ambition, their humor, their endeavors, their stories, and their hearts.
These sweet kids will flourish when their needs are met.
They will begin to think outside of the box, make connections, and be empowered in all of their learning endeavors.
My Project
Two hundred years after the Revolutionary War, my students are still very proud of their colonial roots. Yet, it’s difficult for them to really grasp what life was like in our early country as it was in turmoil.
It’s important to be patriotic, but it is even more beneficial to understand the origin of patriotism.
The novel set that I am requesting does just this in a manner that pulls the reader into the intensity of British-occupied Boston during the American Revolution. Students will be on the edge of their seats every page of this story!
But, I honestly was not expecting the relevancy this story would have to today’s culture. The plot of "George Washington's Spy" follows a group of young kids that get mysteriously transported and trapped in Colonial America, yet the girls and boys unfortunately get separated. The boys take up camp with Patriots working alongside the Sons of Liberty while the girls are taken in by a kind Loyalist family. Both groups of children experience kindness and witness the astonishing effects of wartime on the people they’ve befriended. A common theme emerges when the children wrestle with understanding how people use violence to justify good intentions. I recount all of this to explain in detail how this story will not only improve understanding of both sides of the Revolution but more so how it will deeply convey an understanding that violence does not always have to be a go-to.
In today’s world, this is a crucial thing for our children to understand. They watch the news and see the papers. They hear adults. They are fully aware of the feuds that are resurfacing- those where people use violence to justify good intentions.
Help my students relate to Colonial America... and learn how to respond to today’s culture.
