This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We research things every single day, from movie times to product reviews. For some, this is as deep as their research skills go, but for our students, they must go so much deeper. Students must evaluate materials for credibility, determine primary and secondary sources, and determine what is relevant to their study. And this is just to gather information. After they get the facts, they must write a well-structured, coherent essay presenting those facts to an audience. These skills require a lot of training and modeling.
Research shows students entering college are not prepared for the rigor of demanding academic research because they have not been adequately prepared by perusing reference materials for suitable content.
The internet, while a great source of information, has hindered some students' improvement because they aren't being exposed to quality academic writing and credible sources.
These reference books were chosen to help students see what credible sources look like and give them models of quality writing to scaffold their own writing. With a variety of reference materials in our class library, I am confident that, with practice and exposure to credible writing structures, my students will be able to pick out credible writing from other sources, like the internet.
