Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher on the Lower East Side. 61% of the school population is from low income and 58% of the population is eligible for free school lunch.

I am a 5th-grade ICT teacher of 22 students.

My students and I have been working on many academic skills. Coming back to school has been a unique experience. A lot of my students are excited to read hard copy books for the first time after being remote for 18 months. It would bring so much joy to my students to get some books for my classroom, especially DK books. They love learning about animals, nature, space and sharing the information they have read with each other.

With these resources, my students would have more books they enjoy reading and they would have an opportunity to receive a lifelong love for reading.

My Project

These books will enhance our classroom library and show students how their interests are being considered, which increases student rapport. All of these books have been selected after observing students' interests. Many of them have also asked for more books like these and are eager to share information on two books we have similar to these.

With these books, students will be able to look forward to reading and learning.

This will also help my students become better readers and more knowledgeable. In addition, it will allow them to provide an interest to take classes beyond elementary school or outside of elementary school if they are further interested in learning more about one of the book's topics.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
