My Students

My students are high achieving 9th and 12th graders who work hard and want to do well in school. I teach in rural Maine so I like to keep my kids connected to what is happening in the world. They love reading a student news magazine and having debates. Those can go on if I let them...like the debate about whether the penny should be abolished. My 12th-grade students work hard because they want to get into college. My AP scores were excellent this year and I credit their hard work. We write a lot of essays and many of them write drafts ahead of time to get peer-edited and receive my feedback. They are very respectful and I rarely have any disciplinary problems in either grade. I teach in a public school and the community is very supportive and offers what resources they can. I love my students and the school I work in. I am very lucky!

My Project

First, let me begin by saying I will be buying this myself through funds I will soon earn through AP Learning Partners and Digital Fitness. I want to use my money to teach myself the djembe and then bring a drumming circle club to my school. Prior to coronavirus, mental health issues (depression and anxiety) were on the rise across the country. Now--and this is April 1--I can't imagine what kids will be feeling when we get back to school. I have my doubts it will be this year. So my school is closed and I'm doing remote teaching. I'd like to pound away from my fears as I learn the drum and then take it to GHS. I expect to be able to easily purchase more djembes through grants.
