This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom isn't always what you picture when you consider traditional education. We meet for whole group instruction on a futon. Students are engaged through technology, problem solving, and lessons crafted to incorporate their interests. We get loud at times, but we love learning together.

My students come from a high-poverty community; 76% of the student body qualifies as low-income.

Most of my students are Hispanic, the rest being African American. Many are also English Language Learners. This causes me to place a huge importance on hands-on learning. My students are an active and friendly bunch of kids. While they have significantly less than their suburban neighbors, they work hard and want much for their future.

My Project

More than ever before, students are being asked to record themselves in their classrooms. Making videos and sound bytes is nothing new for my students, as they live in a Smartphone world. In the classroom, however, they're being able to maximize technology to record their voices for fluency, narrate videos, and create Podcasts around their learning. With ESL students, these recordings can be extra powerful.

This type of learning is highly authentic, but requires some important resources.

My students have devices provided through grant money, but few can afford a pair of headphones with a built in microphone, which is essential for crisp audio recordings. We would like to build some DIY sound booths, which would help eliminate background noise in student work. Panels for our sound booths, as well as four long-corded microphones, will allow students to make their best recordings yet.
