I need to attend the 6-Day Educator Workshop at Bios to develop strategies and programs that will engage students in my classroom and create a school culture of activism.
My students are amazing. They work hard to learn about science everyday even if the lessons are a bit dry. They love engaging projects like building robots and engineering rockets. However, currently topics like ecology, ocean science, and conservation aren't as engaging. I know that my students would thrive with more engaging learning and a school culture of activism. There is a desire within my students to protect our planet, I just need to create the right tools to make learning about and protecting ecosystems exciting.
My Project
I want to increase engagement in my classroom by participating in the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences Teacher Workshop and creating hands-on lessons that take oceanography out of the text book and into the field. Ocean science has been a hard topic for me to engage students in since we don't live near the ocean. This PD will give me the tools to create ocean based lessons that use virtual technology and field trips to bring science to life.
This PD will also help me improve school culture by creating initiates around activism and conservation.
For example, currently many of my students do not recycle. My students who do advocate for recycling are sometimes ostracized. This PD will help me to change the school climate by creating opportunities for student activism around ocean conservation that are exciting and relevant.
During this teacher workshop, I will explore coral reefs, investigate tidal pools, use exciting technology like underwater robots, and learn about conservation efforts like protecting the Cahow. I will translate these experiences into engaging curriculum in my classroom and green initiatives that improve school culture through activism.
