Diving Into Dahl: Discovering Dynamic Stories and Characters

Help me give my students class sets of mentor texts to learn about character traits and story structure.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are eager readers who love stories filled with imagination, humor, and unforgettable characters. To deepen their understanding of story structure and character traits, I am requesting class sets of two Roald Dahl novels so every student can actively participate in shared reading and analysis.

Roald Dahl’s books are ideal for teaching literary elements.

His stories have clear beginnings, middles, and endings, strong plot development, and characters who change and grow in meaningful ways. With class sets of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach, students will explore how authors introduce characters, develop conflicts, and resolve problems. They will also examine character traits such as bravery, kindness, greed, and perseverance using text evidence.

These books will allow us to engage in close reading, group discussions, and writing activities. Students will identify key plot events, analyze how characters respond to challenges, and compare characters across texts. Having individual copies ensures that every student can annotate, reread important passages, and fully engage in lessons—something that is difficult without enough books.

This project will support diverse learners by providing high-interest texts that motivate reluctant readers while still challenging advanced students. The shared reading experience will build confidence, comprehension skills, and a love of literature.

Your support will put high-quality novels directly into students’ hands, helping them become thoughtful readers and writers. With your help, my classroom will come alive with rich discussions, critical thinking, and the magic of Roald Dahl’s storytelling.

Thank you for investing in my students and their learning!
