Divide and Conquer: Investing in Proper Recycling Methods!

My students need paper collection bins and a bin transport cart to initiate a grassroots program of proper paper recycling and waste reduction in our school building.

My Students

My students attend a public high school with an enrollment of nearly 2,000 in a large urban district. The district is located in an area of highest poverty. One hundred percent of the students enrolled receive free breakfast and lunch.

My students are diverse in race and ethnicity.

All have experienced trauma and hardships that significantly impact their progress socially, behaviorally, and academically. They have a range of diagnosed disabilities that further impede their success in school and social environments.

My students are agents of change! They repeatedly give of themselves when they have so little of their own. They complete multiple service learning projects throughout the year that impact their community and it's residents in a positive way.

They have exhibited the desire to facilitate school pride, spirit, and positive communication between students, staff, and parents of their recently consolidated high schools.

My Project

As agents of change, my students have expressed the desire to contribute to our school, community, and world through project-based learning activities that deliver a positive impact on our environment. My students have explored components of soil and water conservation and worked with community organizations to learn about how human impact affects our environment most. They have conducted a trash survey to identify factors that lead to unnecessary waste and inefficient means of collecting recyclable materials within our school buildings.

By initiating a grassroots effort to recycle paper waste in our buildings, my students hope to educate our school and community by modeling proper collection and disposal of these products.

They will use the recycling containers and wheeled cart to collect paper waste and deliver it to the proper collection bin. Through these efforts, my students will reinforce the need for collective accountability with proper recycling and aim to REDUCE the overall paper consumption and waste in our buildings.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
