Our students come to us from all walks of life. They attend Title I schools and are working hard to make a better life for themselves, and in many cases their families. I am the Dean of Students at two schools. I work with students to help them make better behavioral choices and we set goals to help pave their way to success. Although, most of my students have a hard time regulating their behaviors, they are all amazing kids who just need a different path and plan to reach their true potential. Each student has a way of doing things and they are very successful once they find the formula that meets their needs.
This support provides them the tools to successfully learn and grow.
Many of my students get a chance to garden, provide community services, and mentor younger students. As the year goes on they make changes that help them maintain appropriate behavior and stay in their learning environment. It is amazing to see all they accomplish in their lives once they have had a chance to work through their struggles and find the right path.
My Project
All children will be returning to school with two extra needs this year. First, they will need to be regularly reminded that they are safe at school. Second, they will need to know that we value and will empower them even more than we ever have before. While these books will not do either of these for us, they will provide platforms for these discussions and allow for a larger group of children to be a bit more represented in their classroom libraries. Students need to know we want to learn about all cultures and all people. Reading and open discussions will be the first step in showing each child just how important they are in our community.
