I have the distinct honor to teach a diverse population of students. Each student has unique abilities and needs that are best fostered in an open learning environment where they can be challenged to think deeper while evaluating text, multimedia information, and visual images.
I want to provide opportunities for students to grow in empathy as well as critical thinking; one of the best ways to do this to accomplish this is to provide diverse, rich literature for all students.
My students read daily. By having diverse voices in my classroom library, students are allowed to hear voices other than their own; this increases empathy and deepens understanding of the world.
The books I selected are often checked out from our school library or are hotly anticipated new releases from beloved authors.
Many options are hardcovers so they will last through multiple readings by hundreds of students.
