My Students
My students live and attend school in Brooklyn, New York. They are a beautifully diverse group of children from a variety of backgrounds, representing a multitude of cultures. One thing they have in common is a desire to read.
Most importantly, they have a longing to see themselves in the titles they choose.
Books with diverse protagonists living diverse stories are necessary to support the academic and emotional growth of my students.
Representation is very important to every kind of kid and books are a wonderful way for students to experience that.
My Project
My classroom is filled with beatiful and diverse students who deserve to see themselves in stories that represent more than the struggles that might be connected to who they, how they present, or how they identify.
While I have chosen some titles that explore tough topics, I have also chosen titles that represent teens of color and those who are non-binary in ordinary teen fiction scenarios.
My students deserve to see themselves starring in more than one kind of story.
They need to see themselves in power and part of the world they live in. Additionally, these books will help students recognize the power and beauty in students who may have been marginalized in the past.
