I am a Special Educator in a wonderful elementary school in New York. Our staff is committed to teaching diversity to our students.

Each year our staff volunteers to come together for a weekend "retreat" in our school library. The retreat unifies our school and chooses a current hot topic for us to bring our heads together on. This year the topic of incorporating diversity awareness to all of our students is our agenda.

It's Okay to be Different by Todd Parr, is a picture book that is understandable to students in every grade. Having a unified text to launch discussions about differences and how to accept the differences in others, will make this important topic an integral part of our entire school's culture.
