My Project

One of the most important aspects of the school day is independent reading time. This is the time when students can practice what we've learned in our lessons, choose the books they're most interested in, and expand their ideas and understandings through the experiences of the characters in their books. Having a variety of books with characters from different backgrounds, cultures, ability-levels, and genders is absolutely essential to keeping students engaged and eager to read.

In 2018, data showed that there were more books about animals and non-human characters than all people of color combined.

In order to feel safe, heard, and a real part of a classroom community, children need to feel seen and see themselves reflected back. By adding books with diverse characters to our classroom libraries, students can feel represented, no matter the demographics of our classroom.
