Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students would love to reclassify from their ELD class; however, with low skills, intrinsic motivation, scholarly traits (work habits), cooperation, SEI, parental involvement + they would benefit from being able to have an array of reading material that is both current and classical. My students need support in strengthening their listening, communication, verbal, writing, and reading skills. My students comprise of many cultures ranging from nationalities of Hispanic descent, Armenian, Russian, Filipino, and Asian.
I also teach an all-girl reading class to allow their confidence to flourish, ask questions, and learn without any possible intimidation from the opposite gender.
I would love text they can be motivated to excel as an individual and find empowerment to be young strong, independent, knowledgeable ladies.
My Project
The titles I selected are reflective of my students. Many of my ELD (English Language Development) population lack motivation and control. I'm hoping to present them with stories of minorities they can relate, make connections, and aspire to greatness by encouraging themselves intrinsically!
I selected minority stories that overcame obstacles and challenges, whether it be language, adaptation to a new country because they recently immigrated, Milo traveling to a world of crazy and "confusing" math concepts (Phantom Tollbooth), and coming of age (Flipped) which may in itself be a confusing and distracting time in their adolescence.
We will implement guided reading and literature circles with different titles selected to help implement specific reading strategies to help them become engaged and active readers. My students are reading below grade level. The titles selected will help hook their interest as there are different character qualities within the book they can identify.
