My Students
I teach in a low-income area. Many of my students have experienced hunger and/or homelessness, have recently immigrated and speak little English, have lost their parents, or are dealing with a myriad of other issues that anyone would struggle to handle, let alone 13-year-olds. But they still show up each day.
People tend to express sympathy when they hear I teach 8th graders, but these kids are amazing.
They are funny and kind. They are vocal about the changes they want to see and make in the world. They are inquisitive, hovering in that brink between childhood and adulthood, asking questions to help them find their place and their identity.
My Project
Last summer, I used a DonorsChoose project to start a classroom library. My 8th grade students, both in my English and Journalism classes, have been checking out books or reading them during independent reading. The last several months have given me the opportunity to see what my students are interested in reading and for my students to request books to fill the gaps in my current library.
I teach a diverse group of students, and I want a classroom library in which they can all see themselves and their interests reflected.
The books I have selected for this project include some asked for specifically by students, more featuring different cultural experiences, more options for my Spanish speaking students, and also books of photographs I can use in my journalism classes to deepen my students' understanding of photojournalism and the connection between journalism and the human experience.
