Students learn to read not only through instruction but through practice. Students are much more likely to practice if they are engaged in what they are reading. While our school does have an excellent library, it is not always convenient for students to visit the library during class or before or after school. Having a diverse library in our room will create a stronger class reading culture and provide students more resources for discovering what they love to read. As the books are in our room, students can pick one out if they finish work early or if they need a new book when we work on independent reading projects every Friday. They can ask for my recommendations or those of their peers'. They can select books that are accessible no matter their reading level. They can quickly return the book if it's not for them and try something new, or they can check out the books from my class to read at home. A classroom library increases access to books and improves flexibility for students to explore different genres and subjects until they find what sparks their interest.
