My Students
I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at a rural Wisconsin school. The middle school they attend is attached to the elementary school most attended and the high school most will go to. Needless to say, they know each other very well. My students are eager to learn and ready to explore their world.
My students spend the year learning to love books and writing during ELA class and it is my hope that that love for learning stays with them throughout life.
My Project
It is my goal to have diverse book titles in my classroom library at all time to allow my students access to high-quality books that address multiple ideas that may or may not be like their world.
In order to do this, I need to get book titles, similar to those in my project, in my classroom that explores multicultural difference, inclusion, racial difference and more.
My students are from a very homogeneous community and by reading books about characters that are different from them they are able to learn about how people live similarly and differently from them. Books have a way of opening up dialogue and conversations about difference.
