This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our classroom library is the heart of our 9th-grade English classroom. If you bring the books, the readers will come. When you take the time to curate a classroom library that gives students immediate access to high-interest books and invest your energy in building a community of readers, your students won’t be able to resist the books in your classroom.

We believe that building a strong, generational culture of reading with our students can have a lasting impact on our students academically and outside of the classroom.

It all starts with access to books. In other words, it begins with a strong classroom library that sends the message “We read in this classroom” and shows students that books are right there, ready to be read. We know classroom libraries are pivotal, transformative, and necessary. We crave a class full of readers on their way to a lifelong journey, but sometimes we don’t have access to proper resources.

As an English teacher, it is my mission to instill a love of reading in our student population, and much of our students are still developing their English language fluency an other skills. Having a diverse, engaging classroom library is essential for getting students invested in the reading process. Offering student choice based on individual interest is what breeds a genuine love for such an important part of English literacy. When students are encouraged to find books that relate directly to their interests, hobbies, and beliefs, their agency makes a world of difference in their identities as readers.
