My Project

I LOVE how curious, compassionate, empathetic, and proactive my students are becoming this year in our Multicultural Lit & Comp. Class! They are students who care about hearing diverse voices, students who seek out novels and other texts that include representation of marginalized people, and students who lift up the voices of each other through discussion of challenging social and cultural issues.

Literary nonfiction is a type of prose that employs the literary techniques usually associated with fiction or poetry to report on persons, places, and events in the real world without altering facts.

This project includes a list of books selected for literary emphasis; some written in verse, others employ dramatic and sweeping sensory details, and some relying on comedic or satirical tones. All are nonfiction, but none are just spouting the facts of days long past. These books will take my readers on an active journey, giving them insight and perspective experienced by someone of another culture, gender, religion, or even a voice that speaks to a reader's own experiences. These types of stories offer validation to the voices otherwise unheard.

My students will choose one of the books they are most interested in, and join a group of classmates to read, discuss, and analyze the text together. Collaborative student-lead learning is meaningful and offers growth to all who engage.
