My Project

As a high school librarian of a large school, I am always looking for ways to increase a love for reading among my students. I would like to introduce First Chapter Fridays with my faculty. I will select two sets of ten willing teachers to participate. Each teacher will receive five high-interest and engaging novels that they can keep for their classroom libraries. The teachers will be instructed on what chapter or part of the book to read aloud and will also be given several graphic organizers that they may use along with the readings.

While First Chapter Fridays are meant to promote reading for fun, research also suggests that read-alouds can strengthen vocabulary skills, build background knowledge, and even improve academic achievement.

Exposing students to books through this program will build class community during these shared reading experiences, allow students to be able to discuss the books, make connections, and bond with their peers who read the same books, and help to create a culture of reading on our campus.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
