Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. As English language learners at a dual language immersion school, books are so important to my students and are truly valued. I am the bilingual speech pathologist at a K-5 elementary school. My classroom library is an essential resource for my students who are trying to master various speech sounds and language skills. Books are used in nearly every activity in speech therapy, whether it is to practice comprehension, grammar or speech.
Students at my school are diverse learners who need diverse books to make connections and see themselves reflected in what they read.
A diverse library is comprised of books in both English and Spanish; having characters with many different skin colors. My students reflect our world and seeing people who look like them, and have cultures similar to theirs, enhance and strengthen their confidence and their learning.
My Project
When students see characters who look like them, they are more engaged and motivated to read. It's exciting to relate to a character and see that their skin color is the same as yours! It's exciting to live their journey, one that may be similar to yours.
My students need to practice telling stories, they need to practice talking about the pictures in a book, to hone their speech and language skills.
They need to practice formulating sentences, both in English and Spanish, so that they become highly productive members of our community.
Diverse books have the power to engage, motivate and captivate. They have the power to be the catalyst for students with differing abilities, for whom reading and speaking may be difficult. When readers become true readers, many doors open wide and embrace them. Diverse books are powerful tools.
