My Project
I teach English to a wide variety of students with different backgrounds. Many come from different countries or live below poverty level. My classroom library is a place where they can find novels that tell them stories they are familiar with or teach them about all of the lives that are also around them. Having a diverse classroom library, with books like "The House on Mango Street" and "The Poet X," increases reading in those who are hesitant or don't find curriculum based reading interesting. It also offers them choice which in turn can develop better reading skills and levels. I am always building my library to meet the needs of my students. It is important that they know their stories matter as well.
