Diverse Novels for Diverse Students!

My students need Akata Witch, When Dimple Met Rishi, and The Hate U Give, novels that reflect their interests, cultures, and struggles!

My Students

My high school is an incredibly diverse school. Our student population represents cultures ranging from Filipino to African, South and Central American to Eastern European, and so much more. These students come from many different walks of life that color the ways they perceive our world.

It is valuable for students to be able to see themselves reflected in the texts they are interacting with.

With this in mind, the LA department has been working to incorporate more diverse literature into our classes. We want students to see themselves in texts, but also to be able to understand and connect with experiences that are outside their own comfort zones.

My Project

My students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Many of them struggle with reading and therefore dislike reading. In the past few years, we have begun to add more novels to our curriculum that reflect the diversity of our classrooms. This has had a huge effect on the willingness of students to pursue reading. For this project I'm requesting the books Akata Witch, When Dimple Met Rishi, and The Hate U Give. These books will be used for a variety of reading activities.

When students can find novels that show humans and struggles they relate to, they find that they are more excited about and interested in reading.

The change in student attitude has been markedly improved over the last years, and we want to continue the trend.
