This past year, the 10th Grade LA team taught the graphic novel, "American Born Chinese," in our standard level classes. While many of our students are somewhat reluctant readers, this particular novel, and the accompanying unit, was very well-received. However, as a team, we do not have enough copies of the novel to go around. In order to make the best use of our copies of the novel, students this year were required to share books during class. This made classroom pacing and work difficult, as students all read at different speeds and need varying amounts of time to read the text, think about what they have read, and then complete any accompanying written work. We need 16 more copies of American Born Chinese so each student in a class can have their own book to work with! Acquiring additional copies of this novel for use in the classroom with provide students with better opportunities to interact with a text they enjoy, and, hopefully, it will continue to encourage them in their journeys as readers.
