My Students

Our second-grade community is home to 30 active and ambitious learners! We take pride in knowing that we all come from various backgrounds and all learn in different ways. Literacy is the cornerstone of most of our instruction and we work hard to foster a love of reading in all of our students by giving them access to daily read-alouds and providing them with independent reading time using "just right' books.

Set in a high poverty urban area, our classroom provides an escape for our students to engage in fun, exciting learning experiences.

My co-teacher and I have worked hard to set up a classroom that fosters a love of learning among all of our students. Our classroom environment helps them feel safe and excited to learn more and work hard to achieve their individual goals as learners and develop meaningful relationships.

My Project

Literacy is a huge component of our daily schedule and all kids cherish the read aloud portion of the day. Student engagement levels skyrocket when books feature characters and themes that they relate to personally. Often times read aloud books are fun to read, but we need to prioritize reading fun books with characters that reflect the different students we have in our classroom.

It is essential for students to be excited about reading and one of the best ways to foster this engagement is to provide them with books that feature characters that look like them and have similar experiences.

By incorporating these books into our library, our students will be able to see themselves in literary characters and learn about others through books.
