There is never a dull moment with my 7th and 8th graders! My students are creative, fun, and enthusiastic. They are curious and eager to learn. They share ideas and collaborate together. They challenge themselves and each other. Each day is its own unique experience that offers many learning opportunities for the students and for myself. I am fortunate to have such amazing students.
When students enter the classroom, they become a part of the learning community.
Throughout their learning experience, my students grow and thrive inside of the classroom walls. As a teacher, I hope to engage my students in as many diverse learning experiences as possible in order to expand their mind and their world. When they leave the classroom, they have the opportunity to take their learning into their own community and beyond.
My Project
Reading is an important part of what we do in our classroom. Engaging students in reading can be challenging when it comes to independent reading. Literature Circles are an excellent way to counter some of the challenges of independent reading. Students have a choice and a say in what they read and they also have the opportunity to talk and engage with the book with peers within small groups. The most exciting part of this project is that the sets of books I have selected for this project are all novels in verse.
Reading a novel written in verse can be incredibly engaging for students of various interests.
Some of the books include sports, family, friends, and other high-interest topics for middle school students. Novels in verse also offer an outlet for expression and emotion when students discuss with each other what they have read.
