My Students

My students are English Learners in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. Their abilities range from greeting and say goodbye in English to write a five-paragraph argumentative essay. Many are below grade level in reading. Despite academic challenges, they are determined, resilient, and Warrior Strong.

My Project

All students want to feel connected. One way to do this is to see themselves reflected in books. Access to diverse books helps kids feel loved and accepted. In addition, diverse books enhance respect for others and help them build empathy.

During remote and hybrid learning, students will be able to read diverse books and take part in meaningful discussions in class.

The books are not only age-appropriate for middle schoolers, but at the correct instructional level. We will read the text aloud together with a special focus on vocabulary, comprehension, and writing.
