My students need an expansive classroom library to ensure high engagement. The entire 9th grade English team will use these resources to instill a passion for reading and to improve reading comprehension.
My students fill my classroom, literally and figuratively, when they enter English 9. They are brimming with anecdotal stories of their last class period or an event the day before. Their worlds expand daily, and as freshmen, they are eager to make sense of it all. Their energy is contagious.
I teach in a high-poverty/low income urban school district, and yet my students are filled with hope.
The hope that their hard work matters, that their goals are attainable, and that what we do together in our classroom is meaningful.
Our freshmen English team is building classroom libraries with books that are not only stimulating and engaging for students but also span high/low reading levels. Titles include "Bridge to Terabithia", "Freak the Mighty", and "My Sister's Keeper".
A necessary element for a successful reading workshop model is to provide an extensive classroom library to ensure all students are able to connect with a book of choice to make their reading experience pleasurable.
By offering a comprehensive classroom library, we are inviting our students into a world they cannot easily access, as our school's library is only open two days a week and then for only English class and lunch.
