Diverse Books for Diverse Kids

Help me give my students beautiful picture books that reflect the ethnic and racial diversity in the our class and in the world.

My Students

I have a group of energetic, eager learners who come to my classroom ready to learn. Our urban, inner city school is culturally, racially, socioeconomically, religiously, and linguistically very diverse. For example, we have 22 languages spoken at our school and about sixty percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Our classroom diversity creates a rich learning environment with a variety of academic and social needs.

We are a close-knit group of learners who respect each other, try our best, and learn from our mistakes.

My Project

Please help give my class of diverse learners new books for our class library. With the activism in the country regarding Black Lives Matter, it is so important to have books that reflect and represent the students in our class and in the world.

Students need to see themselves in the books we read, and they need to learn about others they don't see in their everyday lives through books.

I want to give my students books that include racial diversity, ethnic diversity, developmental diversity, and gender diversity. Titles like Your Name is a Song, Dear Abuela, and Black is a Rainbow Color are all books that reflect many of my students.
