Diverse Books for Diverse Kiddos!

My students need more diverse literature in our classroom library to feel represented and important, while fostering their love of reading.

My Students

I teach two blocks of ELA and Social Studies to roughly 60 fifth graders all from various backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities. The kiddos often range in reading levels anywhere from kindergarten all the way through 9th grade! All in one room! We are a Title 1 school with roughly 80% free or reduced-price lunch. Many of our families struggle to get even their most basic needs met and books can often be considered a luxury.

These kiddos are chatty, spunky, hilarious, bright, and determined and it’s my job to help them reach their goals while fostering a love of reading.

They ALL deserve to see themselves represented and reflected within books so they feel important, deserving, and special.

My Project

Fostering a love of reading is most definitely my passion but it's not always easy. The wide diversity in my classroom is incredible and one of the things I love the most about my school. However, an increasingly diverse classroom can prove tricky when not all students can find stories or characters that relate to their backgrounds, cultures, families, and tradition. Books like “I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World” by Malala Yousafzai and “One Green Apple” by Eve Bunting will allow my Muslim students to showcase and be proud of their culture and religion. “The Matatu” by Eric Walters and Eva Campbell, “Home of the Brave” by Katherine Applegate, and “Refugee” by Andy Gratz can be invaluable for our E. African refugee students who might be feeling alone or misunderstood.

By adding books where all of my students can see themselves and feel represented, it allows them to have more buy-in and interest in what their reading and truly feel like a member of our classroom community.

Not to mention, it allows students to learn about each others cultures which can further create a more positive and inclusive learning environment.
