Help me give my students amazing books that will give them a chance to see themselves represented and to learn about people who are different from them.
I teach a group of 13 second-graders at a Title I School. Our school is composed of 22% Native American students and 61% students of color. 51% of students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch.
Students at our school work hard and show up ready to learn despite the systemic inequities that many of them face daily.
Despite starting the year online, we are going to work hard this year to create a classroom culture where students feel safe to be themselves and are supportive of one another. My goal as their teacher is to encourage them to feel comfortable with me and each other so that they can take risks and grow as learners and people.
My Project
Now more than ever we can see the need to have an anti-racist curriculum in our schools. Diverse read alouds are just one part of that but a part that I believe is necessary and impactful.
Giving students the chance to see a diverse group of characters - some who mirror their experiences and some who give them a window into other experiences is a critical component of anti-racist education.
I would love to use these books while distance learning to ensure that my students are exposed to high quality books that will empower and inspire them.
