Diverse Books for an Anti-Racist, Inclusive Classroom

Help me give my students a group of books that talk about race, ethnicity, and diversity so that students can start learning at a young age to embrace their differences, be anti-racist, and learn about activism.

This project expired on October 7, 2020.

My Students

I have an amazing group of 30 4th graders that are currently learning 100% online during distance learning. Last year I was a 3rd grade teacher at my school, so many of these students have had the luck of having me as a teacher for the last two years and we have bonded and built tremendous trust in each other during that time.

We are a very diverse group as our school is in close proximity to a marine base, and students come from many different places and backgrounds.

Our differences are what make us special and I want to celebrate them and help students to learn about each other each day.

My Project

It is of the utmost importance that teachers provide a diverse range of reading for students so they can grow to be inclusive, actively anti-racist, and become allies to people of all races, ethnicities, religions, and disabilities. I have selected books that will allow students to learn and come to understand people of different backgrounds from the past and in the present. These materials will become part of my classroom library where students choose books to read each week, as well as become read-aloud stories for discussion and deep-diving into the stories themes. The themes discussed in the books I chose include: activism, racism, individuality, inclusivity, protesting, consent, immigration, and so much more.

I want to imagine a world in which all children can see themselves in the pages of a book, which is why providing diverse texts is so important to me.

As teachers, we need to honor the lives of all young people and our classrooms should be a reflection of that. Change starts with education, and a diverse selection of books is a way I can help society embrace people of all races, ethnicities, religions, and disabilities and to respect and celebrate our differences.
