The students at this school, a Title I school in an urban area, come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a magnet elementary school with a new theme of play and ingenuity, and with that comes an increase in the number of ways in which students are able to explore, create, and take risks in their learning.
The mission of the library is to create a diverse and inclusive collection that supports the academic, social and emotional growth of all students, develop and nurture an interest in books, and foster a life-long love of reading for enjoyment.
The vision is to create an environment where academics, play, creativity, and ingenuity merge.
My Project
The Media Center collection is in need of books that are more representative of the diverse students at the school.
Titles like " The Girl With a Mind for Math", "Counting on Katherine" and "Path to the Stars" will increase the number of titles featuring diversity and women, and "Carmela Full of Wishes" will add to the picture book collection.
"Betty Before X" and "The Parker Inheritance" will add variety to the fiction section, and "Dreamers" will provide a book which children facing immigration issues can identify with.
The new additions to the collection will provide students with increased choices of books that are engaging, representative and allow each child to find books that show themselves as well as accurate representations of others around them
