My Students

I am blessed to teach an amazing group of 2nd-grade students in a diverse classroom setting. My students truly have a passion for learning. They are hardworking, enthusiastic, and incredible. Within my classroom, I strive to create an environment that focuses on the importance of cultivating positive social and emotional skills and strong academic skills. I believe in supporting my students with their individual needs, which includes providing them with options to best support their interests and learning styles. My goal is to build a culture of kindness, inclusion, and acceptance so all students can thrive.

My Project

This project seeks to provide diverse books that represent my students. These books will be added to our class library, giving all students access to new and great books! Putting books with diverse characters into the hands of students allows them to view the world from the character's point of view. Having these books help all students develop empathy and appreciation for diversity. By having diverse high-interest storybooks, our youngest readers will be able to find and read the books they can relate to easily. I am eager to give students the opportunity to read some fantastic, diverse books and get excited about reading! When students see themselves in books, they are more invested in their learning and reading success.

A welcoming and diverse classroom requires students to see themselves represented in the books available.

Additionally, it is crucial for students to see their culture represented. Many of the books listed are specific to the holidays they celebrate, such as Diwali, Holi, Lunar New Year, and Ramadan. As a first-year teacher in this school, creating a more diverse collection of books for students has been one of my top goals.
