My Students
I teach in an urban area in Massachusetts. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They range from high honors to special education students, and enjoy reading a variety of genres from Mythology to graphic novels. I provide as much as I can for my students beyond the actual classroom, sometimes it's meals or a sweater, other times it's a book that their parents can't afford. I try to keep my classroom library as stocked as possible, but it's hard to keep up with all the amazing books that are coming out!
My Project
My students are incredibly diverse. They come from a variety of socioeconomic situations. Many of them have very limited access to books at home, and for some, going to the public library is not possible. School is where they get access to books. I teach 7th grade reading and writing with each class comprised of English Language Learners, and students reading below, at, and well beyond reading level. With this variety comes an array of interest and abilities. Every student brings his/her unique experiences and talents, and it is this type of diversity that forms the backbone of our classroom community.
Some of these book sets will be used to teach small, student lead, book groups in the classroom.
This is a great opportunity for students to collaborate. They are able to close read passages together and discuss the story elements, while making real world connections with one another. Research shows that the number one factor to expand literacy in adolescents is access to high interest books.
